Yesterday I had the chance to go see a new thriller/horror movie The Purge. I never really had the desire to go see this movie, but since the ticket was only $1.50 and I heard it was a pretty scary flick, spontaneity kicked in and I made my way into the theater.
Once sitting down with my popcorn and drink, I noticed that my four friends and I were the only people in the theater. In my head I was thinking, "Sweet, now I can scream if I get scared." The idea that maybe this movie wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be never occurred to me.
After sitting through about ten minutes of monotonous advertisements, the lights dimmed, and I hunkered into my chair crossing arms with my friend next to me. (The only way to prepare yourself for a horror movie.) Just like any classic scary movie, my ears were filled with cheerful and childish music tricking any moviegoer into thinking everything will be just hunky dory, and absolutely no one will die. But I tried to ignore this fact, still thinking, "Yes, this is going to be so scary. I can't wait!"
As the movie progressed the plot became clear. The year is 2022. Everything is awesome in the United States. Unemployment is at 1%, there is hardly any crime, and everyone is happy. This happiness is attributed to an annual event called the Purge. All crime is legal for twelve hours. The government's reasoning behind this deadly day is that it releases citizens' anger and aggression that they have pent up all year long.
"Ok", I thought, "This sounds pretty weird." I was excited! This movie had a great plot. However, I only wish they could have gotten their point across throughout the film. Yes, there was blood, deceit, gun shots, freaky masks, fight scenes, and even a plate of cookies. All good attributes to a scary movie. But, unfortunately there was nothing thrilling about it. (Even though it was a little disturbing at times.) The Purge was a great idea for a movie, but I never really felt that when the movie was over there was any closure or purpose behind that great idea.
So, yes, I enjoyed The Purge. But it was only entertaining to a degree. When the credits started rolling I was like, "Darn, it wasn't as scary as I had hoped. It was pretty good though. Definitely worth a $1.50."
If you feel like checking this movie out I will leave a link to the trailer below.
