Mr. Fitzgerald, How Classy Of You...

Hello, Lovelies!
Recently, a film came out depicting one of the most well-known books in literary history, The Great Gatsby. I read the book in my English class this past year and fell in love with the story as well as the brilliant writer behind it all. F. Scott Fitzgerald, a hopeless romantic, coined the term "Jazz Age" of the 1920s. He is one of the most famous writers from that time and his novels like The Great Gatsby, This Side of Paradise, and The Beautiful and Damned are known as famous works from the Great Depression era. He was a phenomenal writer who wrote complex stories about rich and elite New Yorkers. He had his own semi-glamorous lifestyle like his known friendship with Ernest Hemingway as well as his romantic relationship with Zelda Fitzgerald. Mr. Fitzgerald is one of my favorite authors and I thought I'd share a few of my favorite quotes from his works. Enjoy!

"I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity and her flaming self respect. And it's these things I'd believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn't all she should be. I love her and that is the beginning of everything." - Fitzgerald talking about his wife, Zelda

"That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”

"I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find you're not, I hope you find the strength to start all over again."

"Why don't you tell me that 'if the girl had been worth having, she'd have waited for you.' No, sir. The girl really worth having won't wait for anybody." - This Side of Paradise

"Her heart sank into her shoes as she realized at last how much she wanted him. No matter what his past was, no matter what he had done. Which was not to say that she would ever let him know, but only that he moved her chemically more than anyone she had ever met, that all other men seemed pale beside him." - A New Leaf

My Top Beauty Must-Haves

Hello, Lovelies!
Now, one thing all girls love to talk about it beauty. Whether its products, styles, techniques, it doesn't matter. We all love it, it's just a given! So, I thought a good post would be my top beauty must-haves because we all have those products we absolutely cannot live without. Hope you enjoy!

1. Eos Lip Balm
(Summer Fruit - Eos.com - $3.29)
Now I've been through numerous of these things and I always go back and buy more! I've used them for 3 or 4 years now and I even went as far as to buy the jumbo pack of 6 at Costco. They're affordable, last quite a while, smell amazing, and are very moisturizing. I have yet to find a lip product that I like more than this one. I use it twice a day and even as an alternative for a lip gloss or lip stick. My favorite flavors are Summer Fruit and Sweet Mint.

2. Estee Lauder Gentle Eye Makeup Remover

(Estee Lauder Gentle Eye Makeup Remover - EsteeLauder.com - $20)
A must-have in all beauty collections is a really good eye makeup remover. I have had trouble finding one that didn't irritate my eyes until I found this one. It's extremely gentle and there is no stinging or burning when used on your eyes. Not only do I have sensitive skin but also eyes so this is very important for me. I'm already on my second bottle and I know I will be purchasing this again.

3. Simple Skincare Smoothing Facial Scrub
(Simple Smoothing Facial Scrub - Target.com - $5.99)
This brand recently came to the US a few years ago, and I am so glad that they did. Their products don't have any dyes or artificial perfumes so they are perfect for those of us with sensitive skin. They are also hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. I have had quite the struggle finding a face wash that left my skin clean and soft without drying it out. I've used other scrubs too but nothing compares to this one. It's very gentle and the base is rice so there are no fears of any sand or dirt that can come with other scrubs. I also use this twice a day and have been using it for about 2 years.

4. Clinique Naturally Glossy Mascara
(Clinique Naturally Glossy Mascara - Clinique.com - $16)
Finding a good mascara is one of the hardest challenges a woman faces in her life. I've been using this one for I'd say about 3 or 4 years now and I haven't tried any others since. I hate putting on mascara and feeling like your eyelashes can't move and bend like they're just stuck like that. I can't stand that feeling. With this one from Clinique, you're lashes stay in place but don't feel like they're stuck and have a bunch of goop on them. The wand is great and I never have clumps or flaking. I definitely recommend this!

5. MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15
(MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 - MAC.com - $27)
In the past year, I started using MAC products and I can honestly say my collection is slowly growing. I'm on my fourth bottle of this foundation and I can't get enough of it. My one pet peeve with foundation is when it doesn't absorb into the skin and it just sits there waiting to be messed up and pushed around. This foundation doesn't do that though. It blends very well, stays in place, and the SPF is an added bonus! It also lasts all day without fading which is amazing and hard to find in other foundations.

All my love,
Hailey

Blast from the Past: Music of my Childhood

Hello, Lovelies!
Music was definitely a part of my childhood. I was a Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana addict. I was obsessed with the idea of being on Disney Channel and basically being Hilary Duff. I wanted so badly to be a singer/actress on Disney. I know, it's embarrassing. I mean, I was born in '96 and had mostly been a tom-boy so by the time I hit about 7 or 8 girl world kind of took over and I just loved all that girly stuff. So, without further adieu, I present the music of my childhood. Enjoy!

This Is What Dreams Are Made Of - Hilary Duff

This song was my jam. If you don't know what this song is, you should probably turn back now. I mean come on, The Lizzie McGuire Movie? Paolo? Isabella? Gordo? How can you not love it? She has a doppelganger who is an international popstar! I remember seeing this for the first time in the movie theater and it was probably the most amazing thing my little 7 year old self had ever seen. It was simply magical. I mean, that is what dreams are made of.

Cheetah Sisters - The Cheetah Girls

We're are Sisters. We stand together. We make each other stronger that ain't ever gonna change. Yeah. I just recited that from memory. I know the dance moves too. In first grade this movie was my life. I even made t-shirts and had a Cheetah Girl Club. Yeah, I was that kid. But, the leopard, coordinating jumpsuits, fabulous hair, and singing. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that? I know I did! (and still secretly do...)

Breaking Free - Troy and Gabriella (High School Music)

I hope no one had to look in that parentheses to know this song. This was the first song I probably ever felt emotional about. It's beautiful and my ten year old self just couldn't handle it. Even at 16, Zac Efron was a stud. I will just admit. I know every lyric and dance move to every movie that they came out with. No shame, no shame...

See You Again - Miley Cyrus

Que the Hannah Montana phase. Woo...this was a rough one that lasted a while. I mean this was prime Nick Jonas and Miley time. You know who she's singing about. Yeah. You know.

Why Not - Hilary Duff

Why not? Take a crazy chance? Do a crazy dance? This was my anthem when I was 8. It was incredible. I know every word. Again, no shame.

 Year 3000 - Jonas Brothers

This was the first Jonas Brothers song I ever heard. It was love at first sight. I loved, and I mean LOVED them. My walls were covered with posters. My Yahoo IM profile picture was of Nick. Oh my gosh, Nick Jonas. (*whispers*I still love you!)

Get Back - Demi Lovato

Ohhh...this was a rough phase. I remember it so clearly. I listened to this song on repeat constantly. Demi brought out my edgier side and I was honestly obsessed with her.

Potential Breakup Song - Aly & Aj

OH MY GOSH I LOVED THIS SONG! I still do. It's just good! I loved them so much it was ridiculous. Posters, pictures, clothing line, purses, etc. I was insane. Literally insane.

All my love,
Hailey

Let's Get Beachy: A Summer Playlist

Hello, Lovelies!
It's summer. Thought I would just state the obvious, but what is one thing most people share during the warmest season of the year? The beach. Now, where I live the beach is merely a 4-5 hours drive so I tend to visit several times a year. But, many of my fellow Americans are without this luxury and maybe only get a once a year beach trip if that. So, if you are planning one of these trips there is one essential you shouldn't be without: a fantastic summer playlist. For the drive or for sitting on the actual beach you just need a little something to set the mood. So grab a strawberry daiquiri, sink your toes in the sand and kick back to my favorite summer songs. Enjoy!

1. Dog Days Are Over -  Florence + The Machine

2. Paradise - Coldplay

3. Mardy Bum - Arctic Monkeys

4. Only The Young - Brandon Flowers

5. Pompeii - Bastille

6. Australia - The Shins

7. Summertime Sadness - Lana Del Rey

8. Anything Could Happen - Ellie Goulding

9. Hey, Soul Sister - Train

10. When The Sun Goes Down - Arctic Monkeys

My Concert Bucketlist

    Hello, Lovelies!
Ever since I was young, I have always loved music. Even though my taste in music has evolved over the years from Jimmy Buffett to The Killers, my love for it has remained the same. My obsession with music probably came from my dad because no one else in my family ever listened to that much music but him. I can't remember a car ride or a night in the kitchen cooking dinner that didn't include the tunes he enjoyed.
The simple act of listening to Shania Twain on my super cool karaoke machine in my room turned into literally obsessing over Coldplay and The Beatles. This eventually lead to my desire to go to as many concerts as I could. My list of concerts I've attended isn't very extensive. It starts with Kenny Chesney and ends with Coldplay with nothing in between. But there are still so many artists I want to see in concert! Here is list that will most likely grow in years to come. :)

 Coldplay (check!)

The Killers (in August!)

Ray LaMontagne

Ed Sheeran

The Lumineers

Mackelmore

Paul McCartney

Vampire Weekend

Young the Giant

I hope I am lucky enough to see at least half of the artists listed! Some people don't like concerts because they're loud and crowded. But to me, they are something really amazing. They are an assemblage of tons of energetic people all there for the same sole reason. They all love this band or artist enough to spend money to see them in person. So, to me, concerts aren't just crowds of sweaty people. They are groups of people coming together to experience something they love together.

Gilmore Girls Brainwashed Me

    Hello, Lovelies!
One of my favorite shows of all time is the epic Gilmore Girls series. I never use the word epic, so you can tell I'm being very serious here. This show is one of the wittiest and most drama filled TV shows I have ever watched.
Lorelai Gilmore, the charming and flirtatious mother, along with Rory Gilmore, the shy and caring bookworm daughter are combined together to make one unstoppable burrito eating, coffee drinking mother daughter duo. How could that not make a good show? The mother daughter dynamics and hilarious small town setting make it impossible to stop watching.
I would like to think that I became the person I am today without imfluence from pop culture and entertainment. But, I have to say, Gilmore Girls brainwashed me. Here are a few examples how Lorelai, Rory, and I freakishly share some characteristics.
    1. Coffee. - If you have seen at least one episode of Gilmore Girls you would know that the two of them are addicted to coffee. This is a trait I happen share with them even though I started drinking coffee way before I ever saw an episode. But Gilmore Girls definitely encouraged me to drink more coffee.
    2. Eating a lot of food. - Rory and Lorelai eat. A lot. Like constantly. In society today it's frowned upon when a woman eats a burger instead of a salad, or shoves fries in her face. Gilmore Girls taught me to be proud of my eating habits so I can proudly say, "Yes, I have eaten an entire pizza by myself. Yes, I have eaten an entire family size Stouffer's frozen mac and cheese. By myself. Yes, I have eaten a Big Mac in under five minutes. Yes, I do have at least three restaurant's numbers programmed into my phone. Yes, I have gone back for fifths (plus rolls) on various holidays."
    3. Using movie quotes in every day conversation. - Often times movie quotes or inside jokes make up about 70% of my everyday conversation. This is something Rory and Lorelai both do. It's so funny and witty! It's awesome! I'm proud to say that I do this. The only problem is, I do it a lot. Like all the time. So if Morgan or Hailey aren't around I don't think people understand what I'm saying, and I pretty much just end up talking to myself.
    4. A crazy cool mother daughter relationship. - Lorelai and Rory have a great relationship. They are best friends, and that's pretty awesome. I'm pleased to say that my mom and I share a great relationship too. We are best friends, and we like hanging out with one another. This of course isn't all due to watching Gilmore Girls together, but it's nice to see that moms and daughters really can have a relationship where you are friends too.

Most of the time people think brainwashing is a bad thing. And it can be. But in my case, I think it might be an ok thing. Liking coffee, eating lots of food, having humorous conversations, and hanging out with my mom don't seem to be bad things. In fact, I think it's pretty cool. :)

    Xoxo,
    Kayla

5 Reasons Why 80s Movies Ruined My Life

Hello, Lovelies!
To begin, lets just say we all love eighties movies. I mean who doesn't? It was a simpler time. The hair was bigger, the eye makeup brighter, spandex was in style, and MTV was solely music. I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish I lived in the eighties. Now, although John Hughes provided us with some fantastic cinematic entertainment, he also managed to single-handedly ruin my life. That's right, and here's why...

1. They Give You False Hope In Relationships (Sixteen Candles)
I mean, come on. "Oh yeah sure we've never talked before except for that one time after the school dance when I said hey to you and you awkwardly walked away. But sure, I'll creepily find out where your sister's wedding is and sit outside waiting for you to come out while I lean against my red Porsche." Yeah, that's not weird at all. "Oh yeah and we're in love now, just so you know. And I brought you a cake." Keep in mind, that they never spoke before until the ending scene. But it's made out to be this great romantic gesture that every teenage girl in America dreams of. But hey, we're not the brightest bunch, now are we?

2. Detention Isn't Really Like That (The Breakfast Club)

Now, from my personal experience, punishment for lack of decent behavior usually results in a 2-3 hour supervised session of sitting in a room alone without your phone. But in this school, that obviously results in a Saturday detention with 4 other kids in one room all day long with the odd lack of authoritative supervision. I mean, for detention it sounds pretty fun. Dancing, makeovers, heartfelt confessions, etc. But hey, maybe my school is the only one that doesn't do that. But still, this movie urges me to bring out my inner John Bender and see what this whole detention thing is all about.

3. My Longing Desire for Duckie to be my Best Friend (Pretty in Pink)
He's cute, cuddly, loveable, and absolutely adorable. Anddddd he's in love with her. Now as a girl, I think we've all experienced this problem. *insert confident hair flip here* But I mean, come on Andie, the boy lip-synched to an Otis Redding song for you! Not only were his comedic quips hysterical and charming, but he pretty much made the entire movie. He was there for her when the guy named after an appliance broke her heart and beat up James Spader. I mean, WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR?!?!? I'm still patiently waiting for the day my own Duckie waddles into my life. But he hasn't come.

4. Day's Off of School aren't that Glamorous (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
While the thought of having an absolute fabulous day off school sounds great, the reality is quite the opposite. Now normally, a day off means laying in bed sick with your mother threatening to take you to the doctor. But, I did have the pleasure of taking a day off this past school year and in my head it was more Ferris-like than it really was. I really just went to Starbucks and then spent most the day watching Saved By The Bell in bed. Yet again, Ferris builds up an imaginary reality where your best friend and significant other also take the day off and you spend a magical, adventurous day together in your local city. Doesn't happen.

5. Guys Aren't That Creative (Say Anything)
Now, most the time when a conflict emerges with a guy it usually results in constant texts/calls and a lack of face-to-face talk. Guys aren't really that good at coming up with good ways to romanticize girls without help. But no, Lloyd Dobler sets the standard way up there. He comes to her house in that khaki trench coat, raises that symbolic boom box over his head and plays that Peter Gabriel song like there's no tomorrow. In reality, I doubt that would ever happen. But yeah, that's him. John Cusack. Raising the standards of teenage girls since 1989. And we thank you for it.

All my love,
Hailey

The Purge

    Hello, Lovelies!
Yesterday I had the chance to go see a new thriller/horror movie The Purge. I never really had the desire to go see this movie, but since the ticket was only $1.50 and I heard it was a pretty scary flick, spontaneity kicked in and I made my way into the theater.
Once sitting down with my popcorn and drink, I noticed that my four friends and I were the only people in the theater. In my head I was thinking, "Sweet, now I can scream if I get scared." The idea that maybe this movie wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be never occurred to me.
After sitting through about ten minutes of monotonous advertisements, the lights dimmed, and I hunkered into my chair crossing arms with my friend next to me. (The only way to prepare yourself for a horror movie.) Just like any classic scary movie, my ears were filled with cheerful and childish music tricking any moviegoer into thinking everything will be just hunky dory, and absolutely no one will die. But I tried to ignore this fact, still thinking, "Yes, this is going to be so scary. I can't wait!"
As the movie progressed the plot became clear. The year is 2022. Everything is awesome in the United States. Unemployment is at 1%, there is hardly any crime, and everyone is happy. This happiness is attributed to an annual event called the Purge. All crime is legal for twelve hours. The government's reasoning behind this deadly day is that it releases citizens' anger and aggression that they have pent up all year long.
"Ok", I thought, "This sounds pretty weird." I was excited! This movie had a great plot. However, I only wish they could have gotten their point across throughout the film. Yes, there was blood, deceit, gun shots, freaky masks, fight scenes, and even a plate of cookies. All good attributes to a scary movie. But, unfortunately there was nothing thrilling about it. (Even though it was a little disturbing at times.) The Purge was a great idea for a movie, but I never really felt that when the movie was over there was any closure or purpose behind that great idea.
So, yes, I enjoyed The Purge. But it was only entertaining to a degree. When the credits started rolling I was like, "Darn, it wasn't as scary as I had hoped. It was pretty good though. Definitely worth a $1.50."
If you feel like checking this movie out I will leave a link to the trailer below.

    Kayla

Photo Diary: Coldplay Concert

Hello Lovelies!
Last summer, Kayla, Morgan, and I had the absolute pleasure of attending a Coldplay Concert and it was the greatest night ever! Coldplay is one of our favorite bands and our love for them is something we share. The Mylo Xyloto Tour was full of confetti, light up bracelets that illuminated the arena, glow in the dark blow up X's and O's and much, much more! It was one of my favorite memories of last summer and here are a few pictures I took to commemorate the evening!

Let's Go On An Adventure!

Hello, Lovelies!
The sun is high, it's acceptable to walk barefoot all day, iced tea is more delicious than ever, and everyone is happy. It's summer! That means it's time to lay in the sun, spend time with friends, and of course, travel!
I myself am going on a big trip, and I am so excited! But the one thing that has been stressing me out is the thoughtful process of packing. I know this doesn't sound like a reason to stress, right? There are so many other things to worry about: catching your flight, keeping track of luggage, making sure you have enough money, etc. But, nonetheless, I am a girl, and clothes are a very important thing.
I decided I must not be the only person worried about packing. There has to be at least one other person stressed about making sure they have enough pairs of shoes and underwear. So, if that happens to be you, I am here to help! I have formulated a minimalist list of things to pack for a week long trip in the summer. Hopefully this list will help you (and me!) remember what is necessary to pack and what could be left in your closet. (Even if   it's hard to leave it behind...because let's face it...we need options!)

. 7 pairs of underwear
. 2-3 bras (don't forget a sports bra if you plan on exercising)
. 3-4 pairs of socks
. 2 pairs of exercise/hangout shorts
. 3-4 exercise/hangout tshirts
. 4-5 shirts
. 3-4 pairs of shorts
. 1 pair of jeans
. 1-2 skirt/s
. 2-3 dresses (make sure you pack a couple...one for dinner, one that's light for shopping, etc)
. 2 swim suits
. 1 cardigan
. 1 rain jacket
. 1 pair of tennis/running shoes
. 3-4 pairs of shoes (flats, flip-flops/sandals, heels, etc)
. accessories (necklaces, earrings, sunglasses, etc)
. 1-2 purse/s (I would pack one medium sized one and one that is small, cross-body for sightseeing/shopping)
. toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, deodorant, makeup, tweezers, nail clippers)
. extras (hair dryer, flat iron/curling iron, sunscreen, any medication you might take)

If you are planning on going on a trip for longer than a week, I would suggest doubling everything listed. For example, 8-10 shirts, 14 pairs of underwear, etc.
I hope this helps all of you prepare for your next big adventure!

xoxo,
Kayla
